Altar Sculptures

My latest project stems from the question of idolatry. Can one worship sculptures? Like the Madonna? Or is it a symbol? And then, what were the idols in the Bible?

These Altars I began making this summer are not just an aesthetic gesture.

One of them is a self-portrait — an Altar to all the parties I missed as a child. Do I burn myself on the candles, or am I a sacrifice? Neither is true.

The others are the worship of the child. The child with Down's syndrome. And the child with a cleft lip. We both worship and hide away. We both try to change and to make things "right." Soon, perhaps, there will be no children with Down's at all.
